Proof Of Black, Gay Middle Age

Bernie begins his blog series, A Conversation With My Brothers, today. His first round is culminated from a lengthy survey of questions targeting black gay men in their late 30s and up, regarding discovery, acceptance, community and aging.

The results are what I believe to be an interesting snapshot of a population not often heard from or studied; middle aged Black gay men.

That’s a very good thing. Even when I was a young buck I found it strange that our culture is so youth-obsessed. In the black gay community, you have to dip into the leather and bear subcommunities before you start seeing images other than hairless twinks and muscled gym bodies. It really is an abomination; and a lie entrapping a lot of our brothers.

Time didn’t permit me to participate in this series but 12 other brothers provided a lot of personal information. I urge you to check it out if only to prove that black gay men still exist after 35 and think about more than where to shop, who to sleep with, and what Beyoncé is wearing.
