I don’t have $250 to attend the tribute to Maya Angelou, Harry Belafonte and Cicely Tyson at the Woodruff Arts Center, tonight. But, I am still excited about this year’s National Black Arts Festival (NBAF). The NBAF has packed quite a bit into the 10 days and I plan on soaking up as much of the offerings as possible. It’s only fair, since I often bemoan the lack of cultural indulgences in Atlanta.
Of course, there is already a conflict. Ex Lover and I are going to see 10 Naked Men Saturday night which is also opening night for the Pan African Film Festival featuring Eriq La Salle’s film “Crazy As Hell” (La Salle is a pompous blowhard, but the film seems interesting) - and - an interview with Maya Angelou at the Fabulous Fox Theatre.
I’m still planning my calendar.
In addition to the PAFF films and various gallery tours at Greenbriar Mall and Studioplex, I must see the Jacob Lawrence exhibit. I’ll be ecstatic if I find any innovative, contemporary art by African American artists. But, I’m not holding my breath.
