Pop Divas Prepare To Battle

So much at stake

by j. brotherlove

As Christina, Beyoncé and Janet prepare to battle for the top diva spot, I find myself caught up in conversations and media linkage otherwise reserved for the back of the school bus. Who knew? At this point in the game I’m most impressed by Christina, somewhat ovehelmed by Beyoncé, and completely underwhelmed by Janet.

Here’s some reasons why:

I don’t know how successful Christina’s concept Back To Basics project will be but her ambition certainly can’t be denied in Billboard’s article Aguilera Goes Old School On ‘Back To Basics’:

I sent [a compilation of 30 or more soul-inspired songs] out to producers that I thought might be able to get into this headspace with me because I didn’t want another old sample that’s totally recognizable and let’s throw a beat over it — I wanted to get obscure pieces of music and get people who would really, really use their imaginations in reinventing the wheel. I didn’t want any covers. I didn’t want to do anything that would remotely sound recognizable.

When I saw Beyoncé’s video for “Deja Vu” all I could say was WTF? Apparently, I’m not alone. Some fans are so upset that they’ve started the Re-Shoot of Beyoncé’s “Deja Vu” Video Petition:

This video is an underwhelming representation of the talent and quality of previous music video projects of Ms. Knowles. The following problems have been pointed out by numerous fans on and offline:
A) There is no clear story or theme to the video
B) The dancing is erratic, confusing and alarming at times
C) The sexual themes and shots between Ms. Knowles and Mr. Sean Carter PKA Jay-Z, are alarming and show unacceptable interactions between the two
D) The fashion in this video, while haute-couture, is unbelievable and ridiculous
E) The editing, while professionally done, causes one to get dizzy and disoriented
F) The overall feel of the video leaves a sense of much to be desired
G) The video is very disappointing and is not a clear representation of any of the songs themes

On one hand, it’s a neat idea to have your fans design your album cover. But I can’t help but think that Janet is exhibiting more laziness by offering a Janet Design Me Cover Contest:

Janet wants you to design the cover for her new CD, “20 Years Old.” We’re giving you the tools, you bring the talent. The best cover designs could be used in the actual packaging available in stores September 26!

Of course, if nOva gets his work on her CD that would sorta rock!

Conceptually, Xtina’s in the lead, and I love how she’s actually “talking” about the album instead of relying on a well-known hip-hop impresario/boyfriend/possible fiance or husband to do all the P.R. I see longevity for this girl. She doesn’t seem to care for gimmicks or trends, at least not this time around.

I’m so sick of Beyonce.

…except…..her head - compared to her body - is HUGE, she’s way young, and her talent is so vast its kinda scary.

She’s the diva from planet 9.
